Gregory 43 - O'Neill St. Mary's 64
The #3 ranked Gregory Gorillas opened their season on Thursday in O'Neill, NE where they were dealt a 64-43 loss to the #1 ranked St. Mary's Cardinals. Each team relied on their defense in the first quarter while battling to a 7-7 tie after one quarter of play. Both teams got a little more offense going in the second quarter while Cole Serr netted 10 points for the Gorillas in the quarter. The Gorillas trailed 26-20 at the half. After both teams traded baskets to start the third quarter, the Cardinals pulled away and led 48-29 after three quarters. The Gorillas generated 14 points in the fourth quarter but were not able to cut into the deficit as they dropped their season opener 64-43. Cole Serr led the Gorillas with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Cruz Klundt finished with 7 points. Cruz Klundt reached the 1000 point milestone. With his 7 points, he sits at exactly 1000 points for his career. "I thought our defensive effort and rebounding were very good. We struggled to make shots but I believe that will come as the season goes on." The Gorillas (0-1) have a full slate of home games this week as they host Chamberlain on Tuesday, Colome on Thursday, and North Central (NE) on Saturday. The Colome game will be varsity only starting at 7:00 PM and the North Central game will start at approximately Noon on Saturday following the girls varsity game that starts at 10:30 AM.
